Why move to St John’s Wood?
The leafy suburb of St John’s Wood is one of the capital’s most popular residential neighbourhoods, drawing young families and city commuters, as well as the wealthy elite. Unlike some of north London’s more bustling districts, St John’s Wood is a relaxed and welcoming place to call home where a strong community spirit is enhanced by excellent schools, plentiful amenities and ample green space.
A little bit of history
The name of St John’s Wood dates to the medieval period when the land was owned by the Knights of the Order of St John of Jerusalem. It later transferred to the crown and Henry VIII enjoyed hunting in the area. It began to grow into a residential area from the early 19th century and has since become one of the most affluent areas in London. St John’s Wood is home to Lord’s Cricket Ground and Abbey Road Studios, most closely associated with The Beatles and their iconic album of the same name.
Architecture and property
St John’s Wood is home to a wide variety of properties, from small studio flats aimed at the student population all the way up to exclusive multi-million-pound mansions. The wonderful selection of period houses in the area spans detached, semi-detached and terraced, many with classic white stucco frontages, which compliment the array of modern purpose-built apartment buildings.
Shopping and amenities
St John’s Wood High Street is home to a good range of shops from stylish boutiques Zadig & Voltaire and Joseph to independent local shops like Kent & Sons butchers and mainstays Boots and Tesco. There are also doctor, dentist and veterinary practices, two hospitals, a post office and a library. More extensive shops and amenities are just a short tube journey away in central London.
Going out
In addition to the shops the high street is home to a lively mix of restaurants and cafes representing many cuisines from across the world, including Parisian bistro Soutine, Sahara Lebanese restaurant and contemporary all-day dining at The Ivy brasserie. The iconic Harry Morgan’s is a quintessential New York deli in the heart of London serving American family favourites. Residents can grab a beer at the Duke of York pub or sip a cocktail at Drunch.
Green space
Residents of St John’s Wood are spoilt for choice when it comes to green space. The area is home to the world-famous Lord’s Cricket Ground and its tree-lined avenues are a short stroll from the delights of The Regent’s Park, a historic grade I listed Royal Park encompassing 410 acres of sweeping lawns and ornamental gardens, as well as London Zoo which makes the perfect family day out. Primrose Hill offers some of the best panoramic views of the London skyline taking in St Paul’s Cathedral, the Shard and Canary Wharf.
Schools
The area has many highly regarded schools for all ages in both the state and private sector. Harris Academy is the local state secondary school which also boasts a sixth form, while primary options include Robinsfield Infant, Saint Christina’s Primary, George Eliot Primary and Barrow Hill Junior School. The independent Arnold House School caters for boys aged 5-13, while The American School in London is ideal for international families who have come to the capital for work.
