Notting Hill Area Guide

People come to experience the excitement of the carnival or a bustling market day, but stay for the fantastic schools, host of amenities, abundant green space and characterful properties on offer in this multicultural bohemian hotspot.

Notting Hill is a leafy area with attractive garden squares clustering around the main thoroughfare of Ladbroke Grove

Notting Hill fact file

  • In the early 19th century, the area was known as the Piggeries and Potteries due to the production of bricks in local kilns and an influx of pig farmers.
  • The prominent Ladbroke family began the development of the area in the 1820s.
  • Notting Hill has survived some of its more chequered history, including bombings during WW2 and the race riots of the 1950s.
  • Since the mid-1960s, the vibrant Notting Hill Carnival has occurred annually across the August bank holiday weekend, drawing visitors from across the world for a joyful celebration of Caribbean culture.
  • Its property market enjoyed something of a revival in the late 1980s and 90s when many old Victorian and Edwardian houses were renovated, with some kept as large family homes and others split into fashionable apartment blocks.
  • The area is perhaps best known for the colourful facades of its iconic townhouses.

Shopping and amenities

The local shops are plentiful but if this is not enough, a short hop on the tube will take you to the world-famous department stores of Knightsbridge and Oxford Circus or the expansive Westfield Shopping centre in Shepherd’s Bush.

There are an assortment of gyms and specialist fitness studios to choose from, offering everything from barre workouts to yoga and boxing.

Going out

For a night at the movies, residents can choose between two grade II listed cinemas with traditional art deco interiors, the Electric Cinema and The Gate Picturehouse.
