Why move to Fulham?
Fulham is a vibrant residential district which occupies a fabulous position on a curve of the River Thames to the west of Chelsea and south of Hammersmith. The area is popular with families for its excellent schooling options, ample green spaces and transport links. Residents are spoilt for choice when it comes to shopping and dining, with a wide range of day to day amenities, bustling restaurants and famous pubs that come together to create a lively atmosphere and sense of community.
A little bit of history
Much of the area’s history centres around the medieval Fulham Palace, the main residence of the Bishops of London for centuries and now a grade II listed tourist attraction following a restoration project in recent years. The region has long been a manufacturing hub, with the creative industries of pottery, weaving and glass-blowing all flourishing between the 17th and 19th centuries. Fulham is known today as the home of Premier League football clubs Fulham and Chelsea, whose stadiums are Craven Cottage and Stamford Bridge respectively.
Architecture and property
Properties in Fulham mostly comprise family homes of all sizes, from modern riverside apartments at Imperial Wharf, Chelsea Creek and Fulham Reach to a wealth of period conversions to the large Victorian ‘Lion Houses’ of the Peterborough estate, so called because the builder Jimmy Nichols ordered too many decorative sandstone lions which adorn the properties to this day.
Shopping and amenities
The Fulham Broadway shopping centre provides a fantastic range of shops, restaurants, a cinema and David Lloyd Health Club. Regular farmers’ markets are held at St John’s Church and Bishops Park for residents to pick up some fresh local produce or they can pop into one of the many supermarkets conveniently dotted throughout the area, including a Waitrose and Co-op at Parsons Green and Whole Foods Market on the Fulham Road.
The area boasts several leisure facilities and gyms, including Fulham Leisure Centre and Nuffield Health, as well as specialist fitness centres offering everything from boxing to pilates.
Fulham’s lively food scene spans high end restaurants, artisan cafes and cosy pubs, with something to suit all tastes. Parson’s Green is home to Koji with its contemporary Japanese dishes and Megan’s by the Green for delicious Mediterranean fare. Residents are spoilt for choice when it comes to pubs, from The Crabtree with views over the river to local favourite The Malt House gastropub.
There are a range of entertainment venues to choose from, including several cinemas and theatres, while London’s famous West End is just a short hop away on the tube.
Charming parks and green spaces abound in Fulham, including leafy Parsons Green and Eel Brook Common which form part of a Conservation Area. Sandwiched between Fulham Palace and Craven Cottage, the glorious grade II listed English Heritage gardens of Bishops Park stretch along the Thames for pleasant riverside walks. Further open space can be found at South Park and Hurlingham Park which is open to the public, but also has a private members club set in 42 acres.
A great selection of schools is one of the main draws for the families who choose to live in Fulham. There are numerous primary options such as Thomas’s Academy, Fulham Primary and Melcombe Primary, while the highly regarded secondaries include the London Oratory School and Lady Margaret School for girls. Independent schools are represented by Fulham Preparatory and The Moat School, while French schools Marie d'Orliac and L’Ecole des Petits cater for international residents working in the capital.
Fulham is well-served by excellent transport links with Zone 2 underground stations Fulham Broadway, Parsons Green and Putney Bridge all situated on the District Line for frequent fast services to the centre of town. There are also overground options from Imperial Wharf and West Brompton. Strong road links comprise numerous bus services and easy access to the national road network via the nearby M4 and A3.
