Situation
Painswick is a historic wool town surrounded by some of Gloucestershire's most beautiful Cotswold countryside, and is an Area of Outstanding National Beauty. The village is built of Cotswold stone from the quarry on Painswick Beacon and is home to the oldest building in England to hold a Post Office and the oldest Bowling Green in England. The churchyard of St Mary has 99 Yew trees and legend has it that the 100th won't grow.

There are large areas of National Trust Woodlands in the surrounding countryside and the famous Cotswold Way footpath (which runs from Bath to Chipping Campden) goes through the village. Painswick Beacon has magnificent views across the Severn Valley and on a clear day the Welsh Mountains are visible. The Slad Valley made famous by Laurie Lee in his book 'Cider with Rosie', is also noted for its wild flowers as is Scotsquar Common at Edge.
