Windsor Area Guide

Windsor is a delightful town which surrounds the illustrious Windsor Castle, the largest inhabited castle in the world frequented by members of the royal family. Situated on the south bank of the River Thames, the town is connected to Eton in the north by the Windsor Bridge.

Windsor is renowned for its eclectic mix of cafes, bars and restaurants, as well as many great tourist attractions, including the castle itself and the world-famous Legoland.

Windsor fact file

  • Windsor began life as a Saxon village.
  • Its name is believed to be a corruption of the Saxon words 'windlass oran' meaning a bank with a windlass.
  • After the Saxons founded the settlement, it grew into a town due to its position by the river, as it was then cheaper to transport goods by water than by land.
  • The Thames was an important artery between London and the heart of England, so it was inevitable that a town would grow up on the site of Windsor.
  • Just across the bridge lies historic Eton, home to the world-famous Eton College, a seat of learning since the 1400s.
  • Nearby Runnymede is also on the river and is famed as the site where King John sealed the Magna Carta in 1215.

Why move to Windsor?

The area is also home to several fine walks, including the tree-lined Long Walk leading up to Windsor Castle which is a scenic route that residents and tourists alike can enjoy.

Commercially, Windsor is close to the largest trading estate in Europe, situated in Slough. Two mainline train stations provide services to London Waterloo and Paddington, while excellent road links allow easy access to the national motorway network and Heathrow Airport.

Architecture and property

The Royal Borough of Windsor is the epitome of quintessential English charm. The imposing Castle acts as a regal and historical backdrop to this charming town, which combines cobbled streets and riverside views with a bustling high street. Wherever you walk in Windsor and neighbouring Eton there are countless examples of heritage buildings to marvel at. With a history dating back as early as the 7th Century, the evolution of British architecture can be charted as residents and visitors move from one period property lined street to another. As the town has expanded so have the styles of property within it, making for an eclectic and varied architectural landscape.

Shopping and amenities

The Royal Farms Windsor Farm Shop and Coffee Shop, situated on the edge of the Home Park, sell locally sourced goods and produce from the Royal Estate and the Great Park. A short stroll across Windsor Bridge lies historic Eton, offering an abundance of quaint shops, cafes, bars and restaurants to enjoy.

Going out

Windsor is home to the historic institution of the Theatre Royal, superbly located opposite the Castle and featuring a wide repertoire of shows spanning all genres for entertainment all year round.

Green space

For those in need of open space, Windsor Great Park surrounds the town and provides public access to 4,500 acres of beautiful grounds owned by The Crown Estate. The historic centre of Windsor is instantly recognisable with the castle dominating the landscape and the River Thames providing a host of lovely riverside walks, cycle rides and sporting opportunities such as sailing, rowing and fishing.

Fantastic lettings team. Jocelyn, Sarah and Martine are an all-star team. They have made both the viewing and the process thoroughly enjoyable. We sincerey couldnt have asked for more. Communication was prompt and efficient and the viewing was conducted with such care and good vibes that we were left impressed. Really well done!

Rossemberg Maza December 2023

We were fortunate to have an agent friend experienced, but no longer working in the area, who gave a shortlist of three agents they felt we might consider for the sale of our porperty near Windsor. We chose Nick at Hamptons as we felt he had a a depth of experience and a straightforwardness that we felt was genuine. Plus the network and resouces of a large agency. The sale took a while (unlucky timing to market!) and yet they kept plugging away on social media etc and Nick was available for regular consultation and reviews. Once the sale was underway we were surprised to find the Office employed a "chaser" in the form of Jackie who was brilliant at her chasing job and as intermediary, and giving updates on the state of play - to a successful conclusion.
