A place providing a modern approach born from traditional values.
Architecture and property
The first major improvements in local fortunes occurred in the late 1600s. The initial attraction was the discovery and subsequent popularity of the local waters. The second string to the area’s bow was the advent of horse racing on Ascot Heath, which grew into the major event which we know today. It was the arrival of the railway in 1856 that led to significant residential development in the area, all during the late Victorian era. Around the same time, the success of the British economy, primarily through the Industrial Revolution, led to an explosion in many other areas of life, ranging from the numbers of churches and schools through to the formal establishment of many sports and other leisure activities.
The latest phase in the growth of this area was arguably brought about by the introduction of the motorway network from the mid 1960s through to the early 1980s. The development of businesses along the M3 / M4 corridor and the ability to commute by car inevitably led to increased residential development in Sunningdale and Ascot.
With the above, the architecture is varied ranging from the period Georgian houses to the Victorian terraces or semi-detached homes. With the better access came the more modern neo Georgian family homes, some of which have been further developed to provide some of the most expensive mansion houses in the country.
