Enfield Area Guide

Enfield is a popular North London borough, perfect for families, with lots of outdoor spaces and brilliant schools.

Located 10 miles north of central London, Enfield is one of the 32 London boroughs and is the most northerly of them all.

Enfield fact file

  • Enfield is incredibly rich in history and can trace its roots back to Roman Times, where a Roman settlement was established near Ermine Street in Bush Hill Park.
  • In the 14th Century it became an important business centre when Edward I granted the first market charter giving the right to hold a weekly market at Enfield and two fairs annually to Humphrey de Bohun, the Lord of the Manor of Enfield.
  • In the 16th Century the borough became a favourite for royal hunting when Elsyng Palace became one of Henry VIII’s Royal Palaces.
  • Elsyng Palace remained a favourite of the Tudors with Elizabeth I staying there between 1564 and 1572.
  • Delivering clean water to London’s burgeoning population became Enfield’s focus in the 17th Century.
  • The 20th Century saw innovation come from the borough with the creation of the first electric fire, the halogen cooker, digital telephone communication enabling the first transatlantic calls, television distribution systems, man-made fibres and the diode valve all being invented in Enfield.

Why Move to Enfield?

It is particularly popular with young families thanks to its acres of green space, excellent schools and brilliant range of local amenities. With house prices being more reasonable than some of the other London boroughs, it also offers buyers more for their money.
Enfield offers residents a tranquil lifestyle outside of the city, but the area is close enough for daily commuters with easy links to the City. The borough itself is well connected with the National Rail, London Overground, the Piccadilly Line and regular buses connecting it to London and surrounding areas.
Famous names such as Adele, Bruce Forsyth, Russell Kane and Larry Lamb have called the area home.

Architecture and property

Enfield’s property prices are cheaper compared to other boroughs in London, with the area featuring a combination of contemporary new-build apartments, 1920s and 30s terraced properties, and historic Victorian homes.
The architecture throughout the borough is diverse and potential home owners are spoilt for choice when it comes to choosing an area in which to live. From Hadley Wood, Winchmore Hill and Palmers Green to Southgate, Cockfosters and Edmonton, the options are vast.

Green Space

Enfield has an abundance of parks and green space. Forty Hall, in Forty Hill, is a beautiful 1620s manor house which is one of the finest houses in England. The 273 acre Grade II listed estate is a rare example of an intact 18th Century landscape and visitors are able to enjoy its ornamental lake, medieval fishing pond, lawns, meadows and walled garden.
Close to Cockfosters, Trent Country Park offers 413 acres of meadows and ancient woodlands and incorporates the wooded remnants of Enfield Chase, the former royal hunting ground. It forms part of London’s Green Belt and offers visitors the opportunity to enjoy cycling, golfing, and horse riding.
Lovers of the outdoors can also enjoy a number of walks along the New River which runs through the centre of Enfield, and into Enfield Town Park, a 9.5-hectare park in the town centre.
