Why move to Weybridge?

Weybridge is an affluent commuter town in historic Surrey. Well-placed for exploring all the county has to offer, there are a host of amenities and delightful countryside on the doorstep.

The town appeals to Londoners seeking a change of pace who covet the large properties and fantastic schools, with many choosing to establish roots and raise families here. Excellent road links, easy access to major airports and regular speedy train services to London Waterloo ensure the town’s continued popularity with commuters.

A little bit of history

Situated at the mouth of the River Wey, from which it takes its name, Weybridge was a small village until the advent of the railway in 1838 led to its rapid growth into a bustling commuter town. Development on St George’s Hill by Walter George Tarrant’s building company commenced in 1911 heralding the town’s newfound popularity with the elite and the town has since welcomed its fair share of celebrity residents, including Beatles John Lennon and Ringo Starr, footballer Peter Crouch and Dragon’s Den magnate Theo Paphitis.

Weybridge is known for its motoring and aviation heritage, with Brooklands housing the world’s first purpose-built racetrack and one of Britain’s earliest airfields.

Architecture and property

Properties in Weybridge are varied, spanning everything from Grade II listed buildings to luxury apartments with a strong market for family homes. The centre of town is home to post-war apartments and Edwardian semis while the many private roads and gated developments are made up of luxurious mansions. Local builder Walter George Tarrant developed the area extensively in the early 20th century and created the exclusive estate of St. George’s Hill, now a firm favourite with international buyers enhanced in recent years by new build mansions from developers Octagon.

Shopping and amenities

Cosmopolitan Weybridge is home to numerous charming clothing boutiques and home décor shops, while The Heart shopping centre in neighbouring Walton-on-Thames has a more extensive range of high street shops. Further amenities in Weybridge town centre include a post office, library, doctor and dentist surgeries, and a number of supermarkets to choose from, including Waitrose, M&S and Sainsbury’s.

Going out

There are many outstanding restaurants in Weybridge with a choice of world cuisines, from Japanese at Sakura Yakiniku to Italian at Osso Buco and Thai at The Greedy Elephant. More formal dining can be found at the 1907 at the Brooklands Hotel or The Mulberry at Oatlands Park Hotel. The town also enjoys a wide range of independent cafes and rustic pubs.

The famed Brooklands Museum, built on the historic site of the world’s first racing circuit, and Mercedes-Benz World, with its high-octane driving experiences, are both must-visit attractions for motoring and aviation enthusiasts. Thrill-seekers will enjoy a day at Thorpe Park in Chertsey, while Topgolf Surrey’s driving range is a more laid-back option, albeit with a competitive edge.

Green space

Weybridge boasts many parks, gardens and recreation grounds, including Oatlands Park, Churchfields and Brooklands Community Park. Riverside walks are the order of the day and residents can enjoy strolls or bike rides along both the River Wey and the Thames. Nearby Chertsey Meads has 175 acres of meadow to explore, with a children’s play area and picnic spots.

Schools

Weybridge and the surrounding areas offer an array of excellent schooling options in both the private and state sector, including Mamby Lodge Infant, Cleves School, St George’s College and Heathside School. Highly regarded international schools ACS and TASIS England can also be found nearby in Cobham and Thorpe respectively.

Transport

Weybridge is located around 20 miles to the south west of London and has exceptional transport links by both road and rail, with the M3, M25 and M4 motorways all easily accessible. Train services depart Weybridge mainline station for London Waterloo every 30 minutes and take no longer than 25 minutes to arrive in the capital. Heathrow and Gatwick Airports are nearby for domestic and international travel.
