Introduction to Earlsfield and Southfields

Both areas were developed as a result of the arrival of better transport links. Earlsfield evolved around the overground rail station that was built at the end of April 1884 in the place of a large Victorian residence called Earlsfield. When the site was sold by the Davis family to the London and South Western Railway one of the conditions of the sale was that the station would be named after their house. Thus the name of that house provided the name of the station, and thence to the suburb. Southfileds had been fields between the established villages of Wimbledon and Putney then with the arrival of the railway line the development began and in fact many of the streets in the area follow the same line as the paths between the fields such as Wimbledon Park Road and Kimber Road.

Earlsfield and Southfields today are fantastic areas with an excellent young family community. Their vibrant high streets have some great bars and cafés popular with young professionals. The area also benefits from an amazingly fast train link into London Waterloo making it an even more desirable area to live in as well as the district line in to Earls Court and beyond.

Earlsfield has excellent links into London with fast trains from the overland station which recently underwent an £8million refurbishment, reaching London Waterloo in just 13 minutes and Southfields has two stations  on the district line, Wimbledon Park and Southfields. The local bus routes are also extremely useful from the 44 taking you to Victoria to the 270 finishing at Putney Bridge. There is also the N44 night bus which travels from Aldwych.

There are some very well regarded primary schools in the area, Beatrix Potter which is situated on Magdalen Road is popular with the young families and is located in the heart of Earlsfield. There is also Allfarthing and Swaffield Primary Schools located on St Anns Crescent, a moment away from Garratt Lane. In Southfields there are Sheringdale, St. Michaels and Linden Lodge Primary schools all of which have been rated outstanding by Ofsted.  For secondary schools you have a choice from Burntwood School, Ernest Belvin College and Southfields Academy. Parents are also spoilt for choice with the range of outstanding private schools such as Finton House, Broomwood Hall, Emmanuel, The Roche School, Wandsworth Prep and many, many more.

Earlsfield and Southfields both have some excellent attractions for both children and adults. Local parents enjoy taking their children to ‘It’s a Kids Thing’ an exciting 2 tier play structure with a great choices of activities suitable for babies to nine year olds. You also have Mini Potters located on Garratt Lane which is a wonderful pottery painting studio great for children parties. The park life is quite possibly second to none  with no less than 6 parks and playing fields offering everything from beach volley ball courts, tennis courts, boating lakes, golf course, astro turf football pitches , cricket nets, hockey pitches, the list is endless and makes the area , perfect for that sunny family day out. A short distance away is Wandsworth Common which attracts locals for dog walking, cycling and running. For adults the attractions are endless with wonderful Victorian Pubs scattered around the area serving good quality cuisine, one of them being the Leather Bottle famously known for it’s large pub garden and one of Wandsworth’s oldest buildings.
