About this property

TENURE: Freehold

In 1911, Surrey master builder Walter Tarrant bought 964 acres of scrubland near the commuter town of Weybridge from the Egerton family and set out to create England’s first gated residential estate, St George’s Hill. His aim was to build ‘large country retreats for the wealthy gentlemen of London’—stockbrokers, captains of industry, bankers and lawyers, all or most of them English, with perhaps a smattering of foreign royals and aristocrats. His blueprint was to create large individual houses on plots of at least an acre carefully laid out around a golf course, a concept that went down well with City grandees, before construction was halted by the outbreak of war.

Pentlands is a very fine example of such a house. Secluded from it’s neighbours by mature shrubs and beautiful trees the property is approached through security gates via a long driveway that sweeps through the front gardens and up to the house. The reception hall really does ‘set the scene’ for the rest of the property. Whilst the current owners have carried out quite a lot of refurbishment and modernisation they have retained all of the wonderful character features such as the oak floors, open fireplaces and oak mullion window frames.

Of particular note on the ground floor is the split level main drawing room with it’s curved vaulted ceiling open fireplaces and triple aspect views over the gardens to the rear. On the first floor the principal suite has a similar arrangement with high angular vaulted ceiling, open fireplace, triple aspect with balcony overlooking the garden and then two dressing rooms as well as an en-suite bathroom.

It is also worth noting that there is an excellent self contained staff annex over the 3 garages and a large detached swimming pool complex in the rear garden.

Situation
St George's Hill is one of the country's most exclusive private estates. It can be found just to the West of London about 22 miles from Hyde Park Corner and only 12 miles from Terminal 5 at Heathrow Airport. The estate is gated with 24 hour security who also patrol regularly. Within the estate is a very fine golf course with 27 challenging holes as well as a private tennis and health club. Weybridge High Street is about 2 miles away and offers a good selection of shopping facilities (including Waitrose supermarket) and Queens Road is about a mile away with a great choice of restaurants and coffee shops. Other leisure options in the area include cinemas and theatres, horse racing in Esher and at Kempton, dry slope skiing, rowing and sailing clubs and beautiful walks alongside the River Thames. The area also offers a great selection of highly regarded private schools including St Georges, Notre Dame, Reeds, Claremont Fan Court, Sir William Perkins and state schools such as Heathside and Cleves as well as Brooklands College.
