This is one of our Country Houses
Occupying an enviable position within the wonderful National Trust’s Limpsfield Common, yet within a short drive of Hurst Green station and Oxted town centre, Little St Michaels is a handsome, detached period house with origins back to the nineteenth century. Formerly a mission school, the original Victorian gothic architecture remains along with many design features of the period, which have been enhanced by the present owners who have carried out an extensive programme of restoration and refurbishment, which has resulted in a superb family home presented in an enviably sophisticated and stylish fashion. Arched, stone mullioned windows, tall vaulted ceilings, wood wall panelling and some parquet flooring as well as some fine period fireplaces add to the character of the house, whilst specially commissioned features such as kitchen tiles, hand painted by a renowned artist with copies of Old Masters’ still life paintings. Reception areas are gracious and include the magnificent living/cinema room with half panelled walls in polished oak, curving around and above the stone fireplace. A minstrel’s gallery is accessed via a wrought iron spiral staircase and is at present used as a library, the gallery is fitted with full height bookshelves and has ornate wrought iron work with oak balustrades.
In total there are five/six bedrooms, three of which plus a study/bedroom six are laid out over the ground level, whilst the principal and guest suites are on the first floor. The master bedroom enjoys lovely views over the gardens to the North Downs beyond and has an en-suite shower room furnished with heritage style sanitary ware and a fitted dressing room.
Little St. Michaels is situated in a quiet, no through lane, owned by the National Trust and adjacent to Limpsfield Common, ideal for walking and riding. The property is situated to the south of Limpsfield Village with its many period and listed buildings, specialist shops and village pub. Oxted town centre, just over a mile away, provides a wider range of convenience and luxury shopping as well as superb leisure facilities including an Everyman cinema. The surrounding area boasts some of the best schools in the region, both state and independent, with the renowned Hazelwood School under five minutes’ walk away across the bridle path.
Approached via a pair of double, electrically operated gates, there is a large parking and turning area in front of the house and detached garaging, which has an automatic up-and-over door and staircase at rear leading up to a useful store room. The gardens surround the property, are landscaped to provide year round colour and have flood lighting. York Stone terracing forms outdoor entertaining areas, whilst elsewhere there is an ornamental pond and brick paths. The leisure complex includes a mosaic tiled pool (40’ x 15’ /12.19m x 4.57m) with central dolphin motif along with changing/shower facilities.
