About this property

TENURE: Freehold

A picturesque detached thatched cottage located in the hamlet of Beckhampton. This enchanting and surprisingly spacious Grade II listed cottage has been extended over the years to create a comfortable family home which has many attractive period features including exposed beams, diamond leaded windows and original fireplaces.

The inviting entrance hall benefits from tall ceilings, a large coats cupboard, cloakroom and under stairs cupboard with recessed shelving. Doors lead to a dual aspect study/bedroom, and also the sitting room and the dining room. The open plan dining room has beautiful black beams and ample space for dining and entertaining. It connects through to both the sitting room and kitchen. The large sitting room is south facing with many windows which make it light and appealing. There is an inglenook fireplace housing a wood burning stove.

The triple aspect kitchen has a vaulted ceiling, original slate tile flooring and offers ample storage and an open plan breakfast area. There is a useful pantry leading to a utility room.

The first floor landing has exposed stone walls and painted beams and further stairs to an unconverted attic. There is a dual aspect master bedroom with stunning southerly views across open countryside, ample cupboard space and a decorative fireplace. It has a large, light, contemporary ensuite bathroom with separate bath and shower as well as a large storage cupboard. The second double bedroom has a vaulted ceiling and ornate caste iron fireplace as well as built in cupboards. There are two further bedrooms and a family bathroom with a neutral suite comprising bath, shower and sink.

The cottage is situated in the secluded hamlet of Beckhampton, in the Kennet Valley with stunning views over the Marlborough Downs. The hamlet is famous for its racing stable, the popular Waggon and Horses Inn, which dates back to 1669, and is in the parish of Avebury with its Saxon church, inn, village hall and thriving village shop. The area with its famous stone circle is designated as a World Heritage Site. There are many footpaths and bridle paths in the area making it ideal for walking, cycling and riding. The market towns of Marlborough and Devizes are both about 7 miles away, with an extensive range of local amenities. There are excellent state and private schools in the area including Kennet Valley Primary School, Lockeridge and St John’s Academy (within catchment). Nearby private schools include Marlborough College, Dauntsey's and St Mary’s and St Margaret’s in Calne. There are regular direct rail services to London Paddington and the South West from Pewsey Station (about 10 miles), with the M4 (junction 16) about 11 miles north.

The property is approached via a gravel drive with parking for several cars which leads to a detached double garage with light and power and electric doors.

The established gardens wrap around the cottage with fully stocked shaped borders and two mature bountiful apple trees along with a variety of other native trees. Within the grounds there is a greenhouse and two timber sheds. There is an attractive terraced area ideal for summer lunches under the apple tree.
