A popular commuter town in Sussex, Haywards Heath offers excellent transport links to London and the South Coast, Gatwick Airport and the M25, with great road and rail access around the south east, including to the major seaports at Dover, Portsmouth and Southampton. The town itself is a prime setting for families, with excellent schooling in and around the town, a fantastic community feel and the beautiful countryside of the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty on the doorstep for country walks and leisure pursuits including riding, cycling and golf. One key highlight of town life is the opportunity to participate in the annual Haywards Heath ‘Town Day’, a celebration of the local area which concludes with a firework display in Victoria Park.
A little bit of history
Haywards Heath was an important battle site during the first English Civil War in 1642. Legend has it, the town was later named after a local highwayman called Jack Hayward, and much of the town grew up along the railway which arrived in 1841. In recent years there have been a number of regeneration projects to improve the functionality of the town, such as around the railway station where there is a new Waitrose supermarket, and to create new housing. Highlights include the impressive Southdowns Park development and the popular Bolnore Village area.
Architecture and property
Haywards Heath is a fantastic place to live where property prices are significantly lower than those in central London, but the commute is manageable by road or rail. In the town centre there are a great many Victorian terraced homes which sprang up to house the workers that came to build the railways. Outside of the Haywards Heath Bypass/A272, there are a number of very popular modern developments which are ideal for families, including Bolnore Village which has its own amenities and primary school, The Beeches at Sandrocks and Greenhill Gardens.
Shopping and amenities
A recent introduction to the town is a new Waitrose at the train station, in addition to a Marks & Spencer and Tesco Express in the town centre, a Sainsbury’s superstore. There are also all the shops and services that you’d expect on a British High Street, including opticians, pharmacies, takeaways, hairdressers and beauty services, banks and clothes shops.
Haywards Heath nightlife includes a variety of restaurants, pubs and bars, with a choice of independent names and national chains such as Pizza Express and Cote Brasserie. There are also a variety of coffee shops, including Costa Coffee, Caffe Nero and the popular Flinders Coffee. The Broadway is a highlight of the town, with its sociable atmosphere and collection of public houses.
Haywards Heath is surrounded by open countryside and picturesque green spaces, including being on the doorstep of the High Weald AONB which offers spectacular walks. Within the town, Victoria Park and the Beech Hurst Gardens offer space to stroll and activities for all ages, while Borde Hill Gardens has lovely mature planting. There are many golf clubs locally including Haywards Heath Golf Club, Lindfield and Cuckfield Golf Centre.
Haywards Heath is an excellent setting for families, with a great selection of schools in both the state and independent sectors. Many of the independent day schools have a local bus service, including Great Walstead, Cumnor House, Ardingly College, Roedean and Burgess Hill School for Girls. There are also six primary schools within three miles of the town centre rated ‘good’ or ‘outstanding’ by Ofsted, plus four secondary schools: Oathall, Warden Park, St Paul’s College in Burgess Hill and Chailey School in South Chailey.
Haywards Heath mainline train station offers direct regular services to London and the South Coast, with journey times to London Victoria and London Bridge in about 47 minutes and Brighton in about 15-20 minutes. There are also trains to Gatwick airport in about 15 minutes. The road links are also excellent, with Brighton about 12 miles distant and Gatwick airport 13 miles away. The A23/M23 trunk road makes accessing the M25 and the wider motorway network a breeze.
