Why move to Gerrards Cross?

The charming Buckinghamshire town of Gerrards Cross enjoys a great position in the foothills of the Chiltern Hills and is considered one of the most exclusive areas in the country outside of the capital, with many celebrity residents. Despite its modest size, a major national surveying company named it the most sought-after commuter town or village in their London Hot 100 report in 2014, so if central London living doesn't appeal to you, Gerrards Cross can effortlessly bridge the gap between city and rural living.

A little bit of history

Gerrards Cross grew significantly following the opening of its train station in 1906 giving wealthy Londoners easy access to the benefits of country living.

Famous former residents include entertainer Roy Castle, human rights activist Amal Clooney and Conservative politician, Dominic Raab. Musicians Lulu and Maurice Gibb of Bee Gees fame married in St James Church in 1969.

Architecture and property

The assortment of properties in Gerrards Cross has something to appeal to all tastes and budgets, from contemporary new builds and luxury apartments to and detached Edwardian properties. Notable local buildings include the Grade II listed Gerrards Cross Memorial Building, designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens best known for Cenotaph in London, the unique Victorian parish church of St James and Bulstrode Park country house to the southwest of town which was originally built for notorious 17th century judge, George Jeffreys.

Shopping and amenities

The town has a smattering of independent retailers alongside high street mainstays like WHSmith and Boots. It also has a post office, a community library, Everyman cinema, several doctor and dentist surgeries, and major supermarkets including a large Tesco, Waitrose and M&S. There is a leisure centre with a swimming pool and gym available a few miles north in Chalfont St Peter.

Going out

The town centre has a good selection of eateries, from popular chain restaurants Wildwood and Pizza Express to family run Italian Di Paolo and Lomito steakhouse. Local coffee culture has led to numerous quaint cafes and bistros springing up around the town which make great venues for a hot drink and a snack after a long country walk. The surrounding villages offer rustic gastropubs with charming beer gardens aplenty.

Green space

Gerrards Cross is surrounded by a vast expanse of rolling countryside and occupies a stunning position on the edge of the Chiltern Hills Area of Natural Beauty, with its array of walking and cycling trails. The town itself has ample green space in the town itself, families can take a stroll through the East Common to the children’s playground or West Common to the local duck pond.

Schools

There are a wide range of great schooling options in Gerrards Cross, with the state and independent sectors both well-represented. The leading secondary schools in the area are Beaconsfield High School and Dr Challoner’s Grammar Schools for boys and girls, which also have sixth forms and students from Gerrards Cross benefit from a dedicated bus service to Dr Challoner’s. Local primary schools include Gerrards Cross CofE and St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School, while the private schools on offer are St. Mary’s, Gayhurst, Maltman’s Green and Thorpe House.

Transport

A commuter belt town with fantastic transport links, Gerrards Cross is situated just outside of the M25 near where the orbital motorway meets the M40. The A40 also passes close to the east of the town, providing a direct route to central London only 20 miles distant. Fast rail services allow residents to reach Marylebone in 18 minutes and the town’s Chiltern Mainline station also serves Aylesbury, Oxford, Stratford-upon-Avon and Birmingham.
