Top tips for green-fingered renters

Getting your garden ready for summer can be difficult, particularly in a rental property. Depending on the tenant-landlord relationship, you may be restricted in how much you can change your outdoor space.

However, residential green space provides a myriad of benefits, which many of us have appreciated more and more over the last few years, while working from home. A garden can provide a tranquil escape from the everyday and provide much needed sunshine. Getting your hands dirty by gardening can be a great way to feel ownership of your space, even in a temporary location.

We’ve put together three tips for those feeling green fingered, to help improve your rented outdoor space.

1. Pick your plants wisely

Choose plants that can withstand a range of conditions and an eventual move. Succulents and cacti are a great option, as they grow well in small containers/pots. On the other hand, if you would like flowers that will bloom quickly and add a pop of colour to your garden for the summer, we recommend marigolds, cornflowers or nigella.

2. Consider portability

Once you’ve spent time growing plants, it can be disappointing to think of leaving them behind when you move. Potted plants are the perfect solution, and allow for extra colour and variety in the choice of pots. Try to choose pots that are lightweight to help with an easy move.

Garden furniture is a great  for entertaining in the summer, but can also be inconvenient to move. We suggest you choose freestanding lightweight items that can have multiple uses, and can easily collapse to be moved.

3. Acessorising is key

To add personality and colour to your garden, use portable accessories such as throw blankets and cushions in your garden. Hanging strings of fairy lights can also bring an intimate and cosy feeling without permanently affecting the property.

Here are a few of our favourite rental properties with fantastic outdoor spaces. They range in scale and maintenance, but all offer you the chance to experience the benefits of residential green space.
