The days are starting to get a little longer and with them brings the promise of hours spent outdoors throughout spring and summer.
There may still be a slight chill in the air but now is the perfect time to begin to prepare your garden for spring and summer.
Weather its pruning you’re flourishing roses or having the perfect entertainment space our top tips to help you prepare your garden can be applied to any outdoor areas.
1. Preparation is key
Recovering your garden from the harsh chill of winter is key, start with getting rid of any weeds or pests that may have taken residency in your garden over the colder months.
Prune and trim any bushes, trees and hedges to insure any overgrowth is under control. This gives you a blank canvas to begin working with.
2. Take Stock
Venture into the shed, garden room or garage and dust off your gardening tools and supplies. Make sure they are still in good condition and repair or replace any that may need some tender loving care.
Make sure your patio and outdoor seating, Wendy houses, swing sets etc have all faired the winter and generally have a good clear out to ensure the garden is ready for summer.
3. Garden DIY
Now that we have cleared any weeds and unwanted furniture it’s time to give some tender loving care to patio’s, fences, gates and furniture.
Sand, re-paint and repair fences, gates and garden furniture to ensure it’s in the best condition and well looked after.
Repair and power wash any decking or patio areas. Ensure the bird tables and feeders are ready to last another season.
4. Planting
Now for the exciting bit! Plan what you are going to plant and where. Ensure you consider the lighting and soil conditions when you’re planning to guarantee your plants and flowers will flourish wherever they are planted.
Plants such as Foxgloves and Primrose enjoy shady spots whereas Gaillardia and Marigold are sun worshippers.
Place an order for all your necessary plants online or with your local garden centre and then get planting ready to enjoy the beautiful bursts of colour as soon as the warmer weather rolls around.
5. Be Environmentally Friendly
Now is the time to consider how to make your garden as sustainable as possible.
If you haven’t already invested in a compost bin then begin to make your own compost which is the ideal nutrient rich friend for any budding plants.
In addition consider collecting rain water in a water tank so that when the dry season rolls around you have a readymade water supply to keep your garden as healthy as possible without grabbing the hose pipe.
