Care for the environment is the priority at Limes Park, Basingstoke, the first site to be sold by English Partnerships from its portfolio of 96 surplus NHS properties transferred to them from the Department of Health.
Bryant Homes, Persimmon Homes and Thomas Homes have come together to build this new development on the old Park Prewett hospital site.
Limes Park will be an energy efficient and community friendly development. All the new build homes must meet English Partnership’s development standards covering energy efficiency, environmental issues, sustainability plus security and safety.
Features include cedar cladding from sustainable forests; recycling points around the development and water butts in the gardens. The development also includes a number of “expandable” homes where space can be altered cost effectively as family needs change.
Godfrey Winterson from Hamptons International and spokesman for Limes Park said: “Energy efficiency and caring for the environment are hot topics. This is the first site to be sold by English Partnerships and is a good example of the Government and developers meeting the growing needs and expectations of today’s house buyers.”
Special care is being taken to retain the features of the historic hospital buildings in the centre of Limes Park. A 120 ft water tower is the focal point which can be seen from miles around. There is also a clock tower, the main hall and six outer buildings which will all be sensitively converted and will feature high ceilings and sash windows. The red brick buildings were designed by architect GT Hine and completed in 1912.
Residents will be encouraged to care for the Limes Park environment and its community activities and an estate management company will be set up to ensure its long term sustainability. The development will include designated cycle routes, preserved public open spaces including a recreation ground and new bus services to connect with main routes and provide an alternative to the car.
English Partnerships is the national regeneration agency helping the Government to support high quality sustainable growth in England.
Limes Park is situated on the north western side of Basingstoke. There will be around 1000 homes ranging from one bedroom apartments to five bedroom houses. These are both brand new homes and conversions of the old hospital buildings. Prices will start from £149,950 for a one bedroom apartment. The first homes were completed in April 2007.
